CHANGE

chānj (verb)

  1. To alter; to undergo transformation
  2. Make the nature of something different from what it would be if left alone
  3. To go from one phase to another

stevekinsley.jpgBy any definition, our industry has gone through dramatic change over the past year. A worldwide recession has led to heightened corporate fiscal scrutiny. The government’s bailout of major institutions has devolved into an inquisition on meetings. And while we’re winning the public relations battle with web sites like www.meetingsmeanbusiness.com, what does all of this change really mean to you and me?

It means that we can no longer hold a given meeting simply for the reason that we have always held it in the past. The “why” is suddenly just as critical as the “how”.

It means that technology will continue to transform every aspect of our industry. Many traditional planner tasks have gone online due to faster, less expensive solutions. Delivery methods have evolved as well. Consider the prevalence of webinars, social networking, virtual trade shows and even Second Life.

It means that meeting professionals (and the partners that support us) are now being asked to be more strategic than ever before. To “make the case” for a meeting, there are now a series of data and metrics that we did not even consider a decade ago.

When you stop and reflect back – 5 years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago (for some of us) – meeting planning was remarkably different from where it is today…and where it will be tomorrow. Still, there continues to be enduring core pieces that require our focus. Things that cannot be easily relegated to technology.

We all know the value of face-to-face meetings. It’s why we gather each month for MPI events. It’s more powerful than measurable metrics. More poignant than continuing education and professional networking. It’s something visceral. After all, we are all social beings and we have a deep-seeded need to see one another in person.

Are you ready to embrace change? Curious to see how you fit in? See you at the next MPIRMC program.
